METAL & MINING
The RMI was established in 2016 is a multi-stakeholder organization that aims to promote responsible sourcing practices and eliminate child labor and unacceptable working conditions in the mica supply chain. Mica is a mineral that is widely used in various industries, including cosmetics, electronics, and automotive.
RMI brings together a range of stakeholders, including companies, civil society organizations, and governments. The initiative aims to address the social and environmental risks associated with mica mining and processing in India and other countries where mica is sourced.
The RMI also supports community development programs and works with local partners to improve living conditions for mica mining communities. The initiative aims to create a sustainable mica supply chain that benefits all stakeholders, including workers, communities, and companies.
By joining the RMI and adopting its responsible sourcing practices, companies can demonstrate their commitment to sustainable and ethical business practices and ensure that their products are free from child labor and other unacceptable working conditions.
BIO DIVERSITY ASSESSMENT
Biodiversity assessment aims to identify and document the variety of life forms in an ecosystem and the ecological processes that support them. It is a crucial tool for understanding the health and functioning of ecosystems and the impact of human activities on biodiversity.
Biodiversity assessment typically involves a combination of fieldwork and data analysis. The fieldwork may include surveying the area to identify and document the plant and animal species present, as well as their distribution and abundance. The data collected may include information on species richness, species diversity, and species evenness.
Biodiversity assessment may also involve evaluating the health and resilience of ecosystems by examining factors such as soil quality, water quality, and habitat fragmentation. The results of biodiversity assessments can be used to inform conservation and management strategies, as well as to identify areas of high conservation value that require protection.
Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) Performance Standard
The ASI Performance Standard V3 (2022) defines 62 environmental, social and governance principles and criteria, with the aim to address sustainability issues in the aluminium value chain right from Bauxite mining to downstream users, remelting/recycling to support “Circular Economy” .
The sustainability elements covered through 11 principles in the Standard, addressing:
• Business integrity
• Policy and management
• Transparency
• Material stewardship
• Greenhouse gas emissions
• Emissions, effluents and wastes
• Water
• Biodiversity
• Human rights
• Labour rights
• Occupational health and safety

ASI Chain Of Custody
ASI Chain of Custody:
The CoC Standard sets out requirements for the creation of a Chain of Custody for CoC Material, including ASI Aluminium, which is produced and processed through the value chain into diverse downstream sectors
The elements the Standard addresses
General CoC Management
• Management Systems and Responsibilities
• Outsourcing Contractors
Confirming Eligible Input
• Primary Aluminium
• Recycled Aluminium
• Casthouses
• Post-Casthouse
• Due diligence
CoC Accounting, Documentation and Claims
• Mass balance system
• Issuing CoC documents
• Receiving CoC documents
• Claims and communications
Applicability
The ASI CoC Standard defines 3 key stages for the flow of CoC Material in supply chains:
• Primary Aluminium: Bauxite Mining to Casthouse
• Recycled Aluminium: Aluminium Scrap Recycling to Casthouse
• Post-Casthouse: Semi-fabrication and manufacturing to final product.
